Smile Makeovers by Dr. David Han
When most of your teeth are damaged and you’re suffering in pain, it is imperative to restore your teeth to their optimal health and full functionality. Just restoring your teeth may not solve the underlying problem though, so Dr. Han employs the C.E.O. (Comprehensive, Esthetic and Occlusal) approach to reconstructing and restoring your mouth to total health and beauty. There are many components that make up your total oral health:
- Teeth
- Gums
- Jaw joints (temporomandibular joints)
- Bite (teeth alignment or occlusion)
- Neuromuscular mechanism
- Facial muscles
Dr. Han understands how each component interacts and supports one another. Any imbalance can jeopardize the health and comfort of your mouth.
Who Needs A Smile Makeover?
You may require a smile makeover if you have any of the following:
- Ongoing pain in jaw joints, facial muscle pain, or headaches that are caused by a bad bite.
- Most teeth are severely worn from long-term acid erosion or tooth grinding.
- You need extensive dental treatment due to traumatic injury that resulted in damage to most of your teeth.
The processes of a smile makeover
First, our caring staff will welcome you as you enter our office. Dr. Han listens to your concerns and then evaluates your past dental and medical history to get to know you.
Dr. Han examines your jaw joints (temporomandibular joints), teeth, bite, gum, facial muscles, neuromuscular mechanism, and full mouth dental X-rays to see if any disharmony exists in your mouth.
Dr. Han takes molds (impressions) of your teeth, relates your upper jaw to your temporomandibular joints by taking an earbow, and then records a precise relationship of your upper jaw to lower jaw.
He transfers your jaw relationship to an articulator, which duplicates your bite and the movements made by your lower jaw.
You cannot solve what you do not see! Dr. Han gets a clear view of your entire mouth in three dimensions in action; therefore, he can discover any anomalies that are roots of your dental problems; this can only be done by relating models of your upper teeth and lower teeth on an articulator that moves like your mouth. A dentist cannot do this by merely looking into your mouth, though many would have you think otherwise! A correct diagnosis cannot be made if problems cannot be seen.
Dr. Han then shares his preliminary diagnosis with you.
With your consent, he precedes with a Phase I treatment. He brings gum and supporting structures to health. He cleans out any decays and temporarily restores those affected teeth to health.
You, the patient, wear the custom-fitted TMJ BS (TMJ Bite Stabilizer) on a full-time basis so Dr. Han can stabilize your jaw joints, creating a comfortable and pain-free mouth.
He takes tracing (gnathographic tracing) to find the exact alignment of the upper and lower teeth, and the corresponding, stable jaw joint position, and the jaw movements.
He transfers the tracing to a Basta Articulator that can move exactly like that of the patient.
Now, he finalizes the diagnosis by preparing and restoring the duplicated models of your teeth on the Basta Articulator to function harmoniously.
Once Dr. Han finds the most conservative approach, he shares the optimal treatment plan with you.
